Optimum & Optimal

Let's look at the meanings of the words optimum and optimal.

Optimum
(n) : best of several outcomes
(adj) : best / most desirable or favorable

Optimal
(adj) : best / most desirable or favorable

So, optimum and optimal can be used interchangeably as an adjective. For example, optimum level and optimal level have the same meaning.
